What's Actually in Your Cleaning Products?
Walk down the cleaning aisle of any grocery store and count the green labels. The word "natural" appears on nearly every bottle. The word "safe" shows up on most of them. Neither word is regulated by any government agency.
So when you pick up a bottle of multi-surface spray and read "plant-based" on the front, then flip it over and find ingredients you need a chemistry degree to pronounce, you're not imagining the disconnect. It's real.
This guide isn't about perfection. It's about three swaps you can make this week — ones that actually reduce the chemical load in your home without requiring you to tear out every cabinet and start over.
Why Reading Labels Feels Like Reading a Foreign Language
The FDA doesn't require ingredient disclosure on household cleaning products the way it does on food. "Fragrance" is a catch-all that can contain dozens of undisclosed compounds, including phthalates — compounds linked to endocrine disruption in peer-reviewed research.
"Antimicrobial" often means triclosan, which the FDA banned from soap in 2016 but which still appears in surface sprays and cleaning wipes.
Ammonia and chlorine bleach still show up in products marketed as "gentle" or "natural." They work — they also produce gas that aggravates respiratory conditions and combines dangerously with other cleaners.
The goal isn't fear. The goal is awareness. Once you know what you're looking at, the choice becomes obvious.
The Three Categories That Actually Matter
1. Surfactants — What Makes It Clean
Surfactants are the active cleaning agents. Conventional products use synthetic surfactants derived from petroleum. Two common ones to watch for:
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) — creates the lather, strips everything, including the oils that protect your skin and the protective biofilm on surfaces.
- Synthetic fragrances — the "fragrance" or "parfum" ingredient covers hundreds of compounds. If the label doesn't specify "phthalate-free" or "no synthetic fragrance," assume it's there.
The swap: Look for plant-derived surfactants — coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside, or sodium cocoyl glutamate. These clean effectively without the aggressive stripping.

2. Preservatives — What Keeps It Shelf-Stable

Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) is a common preservative that has been flagged by the European Commission for causing severe skin allergies. It's still allowed in US products at certain concentrations.
Phenoxyethanol is a gentler alternative that's become the standard in cleaner formulations. If a product contains it, it's usually a sign the brand cared enough to formulate without the harsher options.
3. Scent — Where Most of the Hidden Chemicals Live
You already know "fragrance" is a loophole. Here's what it actually means: a company can list "fragrance" as one ingredient and include dozens of undisclosed chemicals underneath it. None of them need to appear on the label individually.
Essential oils seem like the obvious alternative. They are — but they introduce their own complexity. Many essential oils are potential allergens and sensitizers at high concentrations. A product labeled "lemon-scented" may use lemon essential oil OR synthetic lemon fragrance. The label doesn't tell you which.
The practical move: Choose products that are either fragrance-free or that specify the exact scent compounds used. "Scented with lavender and cedarwood essential oils" is a meaningful disclosure. "Lavender scent" tells you nothing.
Public Goods is a good reference point here — their All-Purpose Cleaner specifies every ingredient by name and uses a small set of essential oils for scent rather than synthetic fragrance compounds. The ingredient list fits on the label rather than requiring a website lookup.

The one you reach for multiple times a day. Choose one with disclosed surfactants (coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside), no synthetic fragrance, and no ammonia or bleach.
Swap 2: Dish Soap
Your dishes sit in what you're cleaning. Conventional dish soap contains some of the highest concentrations of surfactants in the average home. A plant-derived formula handles grease without the petroleum derivatives.
Swap 3: Laundry Detergent
Laundry detergent residue is a documented source of skin irritation and respiratory exposure. Liquid formulas rinse more completely than powder. A concentrated plant-based detergent used in cold water achieves clean without the chemical load.
What You Don't Need to Replace
Toilet bowl cleaner, oven cleaner, and drain cleaner are tasks for occasional heavy-duty products. Your daily cleaning cabinet is where the real exposure happens — the products you use every day, multiple times a week, with direct contact and inhalation.
Start there. Replace three. You'll have made a measurable difference in your home's air quality and surface residue before the week is out.
