**Flax source:** the best linen comes from Belgium, France, and Lithuania — countries with long traditions of linen cultivation and processing. "Made in" vs "woven in" matters — some brands source European flax but process elsewhere, which affects quality.

**Color palette for serene rooms:** linen takes dye beautifully and the natural variation in the fiber creates depth that cotton cannot replicate. The best brands offer colors in the sage, stone, oatmeal, and terracotta families — tones that work with natural wood, white walls, and brass accents.

**Washing ritual:** linen gets better with washing. The first wash is the worst — it softens and sometimes slightly shrinks. After five to ten washes, the fabric settles into its best state. Do not be put off by the first wash.

The linen care primer

Cold or warm wash. Line dry when possible — the sun is free and linen dries fast. If you use a dryer, low heat. Do not use fabric softener — it coats the fibers and reduces the breathable quality that is the whole point. A quarter cup of white vinegar in the softener compartment every few washes keeps it fresh without the buildup.
