The average woman applies over 160 unique chemical compounds to her skin and hair before she leaves the house in the morning. Most of those compounds have never been independently tested for safety. The European Union has banned over 1,300 ingredients from cosmetics. The United States has banned 11.
This is not an argument for panic. It is an argument for attention.
## The body as theological reality
Scripture is clear that the body is not incidental to the spiritual life. It is the vessel in which the spiritual life happens. "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?" (1 Cor. 6:19) — this is not metaphor. It is a description of what the body actually is and what it therefore deserves.
The question "what should I put on my body" is, underneath it all, a question about stewardship of the temple. It deserves the same intentionality we bring to what we eat, how we move, and what we allow our minds to dwell on.
## What "clean" actually means
"Clean beauty" has become a marketing term, which means it has become almost meaningless. So let us be specific about what we are actually after.
We are looking for formulations that do not include: endocrine disruptors (parabens, phthalates, synthetic musks), known carcinogens (formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, coal tar), or synthetic fragrances (a single "fragrance" ingredient can legally contain hundreds of undisclosed compounds).
We are not asking for perfection. We are asking for intention. A skincare routine that has thoughtfully excluded the most concerning ingredients is not a purity exercise — it is stewardship, applied practically.

## Where to begin
The highest-leverage place to start is not your serum or your eye cream. It is whatever product you use in the largest quantity and leave on the longest. That is usually a moisturizer or a body lotion. Swap that first. Then your cleanser. Then work outward.
You don't have to overhaul your entire routine in one weekend. Intentionality applied incrementally is still intentionality. The goal is not to feel virtuous about your skincare. The goal is to stop applying things to the temple that probably shouldn't be there.
## A note on fragrance
If you do one thing after reading this: check the ingredient list on everything you currently use for the word "fragrance" or "parfum." That single word is the most common hiding place for ingredients that would not survive transparent labeling. Look for products that use essential oils for scent and list each ingredient separately. Transparency here is the baseline.
## The underlying posture
We are not afraid of the world. We are not trying to live in a bubble. We are simply bringing the same attention to what we put on our bodies that we try to bring to what we put in them, what we let into our homes, what we allow to shape our minds.
Intentionality is a discipline. It gets easier the longer you practice it. And it is, ultimately, an act of gratitude for the body you were given.
